The teaching method of rote learning, along with trial and error, one of the oldest methods and used even today in various settings and circumstances. Thus, repeated over and over again a sequence of movements is the most used, by far, when we learn tai chi chuan, especially the forms (taolu).
Advantages of repetition.
Initially, repeat help to stay with the sequence of moves to make and go a few sequences refers to the following to finally end all the way to learn. In addition, repeat favors the development of memory helps us to internalize the order, the name of each movement, etc. Finally, repeat allows us to correct motion errors, adjusting and perfecting each one, gradually.
Later, at a later stage, dominated and internalized and each of the movements that make up a form, repetition helps us to disconnect with the body and movements that are running, to vanish and connect with others, call them, " realities. " We thus come to a dimension beyond the here and now, beyond space-time. It is then that the tai chi becomes a method of meditation: "Meditation for the Movement."
Disadvantages of repetition.
The students often complain that they are bored to repeat and repeat. They do not understand why they have to repeat over and over something that already do. They see it as an unfair limitation, a check against the opponents and resist. They create a terrible sense of stagnation and non-progression in their learning level that leads them even to question the teaching methods used by the monitor or master of tai chi.
feel this is normal. This society of ours where we are all involved have created (and still does) in our needs very important in sustaining attention and learning:
The problem .
Teachers and tai chi instructors are facing a serious problem. Because what is clear is that if the students are bored continuously during tai chi is more than likely you will end up abandoning the practice. And, of course, this is not at all. By contrast, insufficient use of repetition as a method of teaching and learning involves and implies a severe limitation of the above advantages. Then, as monitors or tai chi master, what to do, how to solve this problem?
Alternatives and solutions.
I am aware that in other previous entries posted on this blog suggested and defended parallel and alternative activities such as the variety of tasks and work with creativity to avoid falling into the routine and boredom. Now, however, given the importance of repetition as a method of teaching and learning, we try to find solutions work it did not avoid or look the other way.
This list is not closed. Now it's up to you to continue expanding it. It would also be interesting to establish a sequence of events when a focus on other aspects.
Through this article I tried to let you know the importance of the method of repetition in the teaching-learning processes applied to tai chi, its advantages and disadvantages and provide some ideas to try to lessen or diminish the problem of boredom and disgust at having to repeat the same movement or sequence.

- The need for incentives different, ie, to perform varied tasks that break the monotony.
- The need for intense stimuli, ie, activities with sufficient force to keep us alert and attentive.
- And the need for immediate results in the short term, to keep us motivated.

- Understanding the full benefits of repetition. Remember and dwell on them.
- As important as the goal is the journey made. Focus more on "do it right now" on the road that we still have to go. Raising
- small challenges, challenges to discover while running or repeat the same movement or subtle sequence differences by focusing on different aspects like:
- The stability-instability of the position: feet or so apart, orientation tips of toes, degree of knee flexion, greater or lesser opening of the pelvis, trunk pitch ... etc.
- pleasant-unpleasant sensations. Focus on the sensations arising from the execution sequence of movement or trying to reduce the unpleasant sensations with slight variations: less flex knees, open a little more hip ... etc.
- transmission power for different body segments. When performing the same movement or sequence try to visualize the flow of internal energy to different parts of the body, learning to locate and concentrate at the right time in the appropriate zone to achieve a more efficient technology.
- Coordination between breathing (inspiration-expiration) and the movements. Learn when to breathe in and execute the same movement or sequence, see how it affects breathing in drive technology made ... etc.
- speed run (fast-slow). Practice the same movement or sequence varying speeds to find the motor expression which best fits the defensive technique used. Not all movement must be done slowly. This is false. You have to attend at the right speed depending on the type of technique.
- His martial application. To successfully execute the same movement or sequence is necessary to understand its martial application as a technique for attack or defense. Otherwise, the movement will be empty or absent of meaning and significance.
- The ability to act without acting, just drifting with no will or intention to put the motor running, leaving arising spontaneously.
