The tai chi is characterized by performing slow, harmonious and delicate with an automated execution and repeatedly induce states of consciousness in the practitioner as the absorption or relaxation.
addition to a soft gym type or method of relaxation in movement, tai chi is a martial art. As such, the attitude of absorption or isolation of what is happening around us is, in my opinion, wrong attitude, even dangerous under what circumstances. Faced with a difficult or adverse situation (for example, against a hypothetical enemy) you have to be very attentive, instead of being sleepy or withdrawn.
be awake, alert to everything around us, this is the right attitude in combat situations. Learn to feel our immediate environment should be the objective or goal. Check what is happening around us, developing our ability to perceive in the situation.
Therefore, by practicing tai chi for long enough it creates a struggle: the struggle between being carried away by the drowsiness or stay awake. Personally, I find it much easier to turn inward to remain alert. The alert status is not easy to achieve, requires training and staging, have a clear goal and persevere. How do I get it?

In short, when faced with adverse situations, danger, we must be alert and perceive the space around us those elements (people, objects, areas) more significant to leave it in the best possible.
